Can Tarot Really Predict The Future?
How could it be, that a tarot card can reveal what will happen in the future? It is a question any thinking person would have and the key to understanding is hidden within the knowledge of the human psyche and what a tarot deck is.
Understanding The Human Psyche
A person’s psyche refers to the totality of their consciousness, including their subconscious. It refers to their mind, their awareness, and hidden knowledge they have been initiated into that they don’t even know that they have. Many mystics believe that it is the human psyche that creates reality through the power of perception.
The mind is constantly scanning for patterns and symbols to make sense of reality. It analyses events, people, circumstances, with a relentless attempt to connect what is occurring and what they have already come to know.
The psyche is absorbing an immense amount of stimuli and data constantly, yet the conscious mind filters out most of it, only pin-pointing what is relevant for basic functioning and understanding in the moment.
And still, the person’s psyche contains within it, everything that it has ever scanned and experienced.
What is Tarot?
Tarot on the surface, is a deck of 78 playing cards. Each card depicts a unique image of a scene. Yet hidden beneath Tarot there is a complex system that mirrors the laws of nature.
What on a surface appears to be an illustration of a moment, is an attempt of the artist to captivate a fragment of the essence of life and being.
When one looks at the tarot card, one’s psyche does what it does best, it reads the symbols and patterns given and it assesses accordingly. It makes meaning from what it is given, and it recognizes the essence that the image is attempting to depict.
How Does Tarot Predict The Future?
When it comes to future outcomes, Tarot excels at tapping into a person’s psyche, temperament, and current momentum. Because these internal drivers often remain constant—depending on one’s level of self-awareness—certain paths can be predicted with surprising accuracy.
Tarot essentially reveals the “inertia” of a person. In physics, an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an external force. Our temperament and stage of growth tend to stay the course unless we consciously intervene. Often, we need an “intervention” to expand our awareness and alter our perspective; Tarot acts as a mirror, creating that necessary intervention with ourselves to disrupt habitual patterns.
The Life of a Plant
To understand this, consider the life of a plant. The cards reflect to us the “DNA” or Archetype of a situation—the inherent characteristics and internal traits that make things as they are. While these traits provide the blueprint, the ultimate outcome is heavily dependent on the environmental conditions.
Just as the same plant will produce entirely different results depending on whether the conditions support its needs or restrict them, a person’s future changes based on the abundance or lack of specific conditions and needs. We peer into the likelihood of an outcome by looking at how the blueprint characteristics are interacting with the current conditions of their life.
Are the Predictions Set in Stone?
Not at all. Readings shouldn’t be taken as a fixed or deterministic outcome. Instead, the cards act as a disclosure of potential paths and current energetic currents. We always maintain full free will and personal discretion. The insights provided are meant to empower with clarity, helping us navigate choices consciously rather than making us feel locked into a specific fate.
The Power of Perspective
This is where the energy becomes fluid. While our internal patterns make certain results likely, neither our psyche nor our conditions are set in stone. By using Tarot to hold up a mirror, we can identify which internal patterns or external conditions are leading to restriction rather than expansion.
This is where free will matters most. It gives us the power to change our own internal patterning and consciously shift our environment. By expanding our awareness, we gain the ability to shift the energy, alter our conditions, and ultimately rewrite the outcome so that we can truly thrive.
